Thousands of people who use file-sharing networks to swap and download music have been tricked into installing a Trojan which may compromise the safety of their PC.

The fake media file was disguised as a music track, short video or movie. McAfee said the file outbreak was the largest it had seen for about three years.

The file, which has been mainly distributed on Limewire and eDonkey, has many names and is written in different languages to trick people into downloading it.

Users who are downloading the Trojan are urged to install a codec that will play the supposed media.
