Web developers gathered in mid June for the first BBC/Yahoo! 'hack day'. Those participating were encouraged to play around with data feeds and interfacing used by the two organisations, with BBC and Yahoo! developers on hand to offer advice.

The first hack day was held as an internal Yahoo! event in 2005 and was organised by Chad Dickerson, who says about this year's event: "It's a chance for organisations like Yahoo and the BBC to reflect what they are doing to a wider audience."

The first hack day winners were announced in 2006 and had created a handbag with a camera phone and pedometer, which sent photographs to the photo-sharing site Flickr after every 100 steps.
