According to a recent survey, 74% of organisations are unaware of their obligations under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, which was introduced on 1st January this year.
According to research by law firm Eversheds, 74% of IT staff need more information about WEEE, 60% believe that the date for compliance has already passed, 50% are yet to make contact with a recycler and 22% have no idea what the directive is.
Under the directive, which becomes law on 1st July this year, electrical and electronic equipment must be disposed of through an approved manufacturer. Items such as PC hard drives and servers must also have all data stored on them securely wiped. More information about the directive is available on the DTI's website at:
