Risk: Low

Google Desktop 3 enables users to view personalised news, search for files across a network and share information with friends.

However, a recent security flaw has come to light that represents an unacceptable security risk to the majority of organisations. The risk lies in the way that the shared information is stored . it is transferred to a remote server where it is stored for up to 30 days. Just transferring information poses a significant security risk, let alone storing it remotely. Andy Ku, European Marketing Manager for Google, said: "We recognise that this is a big issue for enterprise. Yes, it's a risk, and we understand that businesses may be concerned." Some sensitive information may inadvertently be shared by employees who may not be aware of the repercussions, although Google said that it was unable to comment on the risks posed when individuals share sensitive information. However, Google recommends that businesses should use Google Desktop for Enterprise, as it allows system administrators to centrally turn off the Search Across Computers feature.
